Disneybounding & Going with the Flow

I decided last year that I wanted to start writing this blog. It was mostly as a way to save photos and my thoughts during the making process of sewing my clothes and costumes. I wrote my first blog post explaining just that and that I was excited to start. My second blog post was about the making of my Arwen dress. And then…………6 months went by!!

I kept wanting to add a blog entry but then when I thought about sitting down and going through a project and writing everything up, it seemed so daunting. I realized about a week ago that the problem was that I wanted to keep everything super clean and organized on the blog and only make posts that were project specific. Which is not my reality haha! I’m never working on just one project at a time. I usually have a large, involved sewing project in the works and I take breaks by doing smaller easy projects. Then there’s the non-sewing fiber arts that I like such as crochet, knitting, and embroidery. I realized that my blog should reflect who I am and have more of a go-with-the-flow, this-is-where-I-am currently sort of feel. Not every post has to have a whole story to tell or teach a new technique. And that, dear reader, is how I discovered that blogging is kinda hard!

So let’s see, where are we right now?? Well it’s mid-April and the next fun event I have coming up is a trip to Disneyland next month! I’ve visited Disney World before but never Disneyland. And the Hubs has never even been to California! So we decided to go for our 10th anniversary this year. As a lover of Disney, costuming, and sewing, I am going to do two Disneybounds. Disneybounds, if you don’t know, are when you wear an outfit inspired by a character. Adults are not allowed to wear costumes to normal days at Disney (so kids don’t think that you are those characters and that you represent the park -no one wants to see a drunk Tinkerbell running around). As a fun, creative way around this, the fan community invented Disneybounding.

My first outfit will be inspired by the Star Wars character Padme Amidala’s wedding dress. Her wedding dress is a lace dress with another lace “cardigan” I suppose you could call it and a Juliet veil. I made a dress using some lace fabric that I had found at an estate sale and lined it with the old curtains from our living room. Now I’ll be using a vintage tablecloth that I found at an antique shop to make a long, hooded, lace cardigan. I can put the hood up for a few pictures and it will resemble the Juliet veil from the film without having to have something on my head all day. And of course my dress is short instead of floor-length since it’s something I’ll wear around on a normal day.

The other Disneybound that I’m halfway through is a Wreck-It Ralph & Vanellope mashup. I love the character Vanellope but she wears a sweatshirt and skirt with tights which I did not want to wear in CA in May. So I’m making a mashup of her and Ralph. It’ll be Ralph’s basic outfit - shorts overalls and a t-shirt - but in the colors of Vanellope - teal & pink. And I’ll be accessorizing with cute candy hairclips of course! I’ve already made the t-shirt using a polyester jersey in a teal and pink candy print that just screamed Vanellope to me. The next step is to start on my overalls and dye the white cotton denim to a bright teal color. I’ll be using a new pattern for the overalls so I have to start with a mockup first. I’ll be sure to take pics and share my findings here along the way!
